Losing Lash Extensions Too Soon? Here’s What Might Be Causing It

You recently had your lash extensions done, and you're feeling great, but within a few days, you discover a few lashes have fallen out. Prepare to panic! While some shedding is typical (because to your natural lash cycle), if you're experiencing more fallout than usual, it might be due to subtle behaviours or environmental variables. Let's look at the most prevalent causes of premature lash loss and how to avoid them.

1. Oil-Based Products: A Silent Lash Killer

Oil and eyelash extensions do not mix. Oils from skincare or makeup removers might break down the glue that holds those beautiful lashes in place. So, if you use oily cleansers, moisturisers, or eye creams along your lash line, they may damage the binding. Switch to oil-free formulations and avoid putting cosmetics on your lashes.

2. Weather Woes

Rain, humidity, and even high gusts can disrupt your lash routine. Humid environments, in particular, might impair the glue's ability to adhere, particularly in the first 24-48 hours following your consultation. Try to prevent exposure to harsh weather immediately after getting your lashes done—and maybe skip the steam room for a few days!

3. Touching, Picking, or Rubbing

We understand—it might be tempting to massage your eyes or pluck at an errant lash. However, continually brushing or pulling on your extensions might cause them (and your natural lashes) to fall out prematurely. Keep your hands as far away from your eyes as possible, and if a lash seems out of place, have your lash technician correct it during your next visit.

4. Sleeping Face Down

This is ideal for tummy sleepers. Sleeping face down or with your face buried in the pillow might result in friction and strain on your lash extensions. Over time, this wears them down and produces problems. If you can't give up your cosy sleeping position, try sleeping on your back or investing in a silk pillowcase to prevent friction.

5. Heat Exposure

Heat, whether from cooking on a hot stove, taking a steamy shower or spending time in a sauna, can degrade lash adhesive and cause your extensions to fall out more quickly. Keep your lashes away from direct heat whenever possible, especially immediately after application when the connection is still fresh.

6. Makeup Mishaps

Some beauty products, particularly waterproof mascaras or oil-based eyeliners, are not suitable for lash extensions. They are difficult to remove and frequently need rubbing or oil-based removers, both of which can cause lash loss. If you must apply makeup, choose extension-safe products and carefully remove it with a lash-friendly cleaner.

Eyelash extensions are an investment in your self-care and confidence, and keeping them looking great requires a little additional attention. Avoiding these frequent pitfalls—oil, heat, touching, cosmetics, and others—will help your lashes stay longer and look better between infills. Consider it lash TLC: a little extra attention goes a long way towards keeping your lashes luscious and gorgeous!
